Summer is here and things are heating up around here. But why let the heat stop your desire to getting a caffeine fix. Allow us to introduce you to the Cold Brew, the hottest drink of the summer.
Cold Brew was created by the Dutch and popularised by the Japanese under the name Kyoto Style Coffee in the 1600’s. Then the 2000s come around and along with low rise jeans and body glitter came another wave of Cold Brew Enthusiasts.
So, what is cold brew?
Cold brew is a coffee concentrate which can then be diluted with water, milk or other additives like fruit juices to make different drinks. It’s pretty easy to prepare as well; coarsely ground coffee is immersed in cold or room temperature water. Depending on the intensity you want you can make the water to coffee ratio 1:4 for concentrate, 1:6 for slightly diluted and 1:8 for diluted cold brew. The grounds are steeped from anywhere between 12 to 36 hours depending on the intensity you want to achieve.
Eww, a Cold Coffee?
Don’t knock it till you try it. Cold Brews are not like those cooled down coffees that you drink because you forgot to take it out of the microwave…. Again. Cold Brewing your coffee produces a smoother and less bitter coffee due to lower acidity. The cold water stops the acid development that occurs during brewing with hot water. Additionally, the cold water also gives the coffee a certain brightness and stability, something you need in life.
Just a Trend?
Increasing coffee consumption, a surge in home brewers and innovations in Cold Brew making show that the growing trend of Cold brews are not going to stop anytime soon. Industry estimates show that the cold brew is expected to grow to above 500 million USD in 2025 alone. Innovations in the industry like the introduction of nitro cold brew where the cold brew is added to a whipped cream dispenser with a nitrogen cartridge. Cold brew is also added to drinks making it a versatile ingredient. The coffee world is as the coffee world does, but experts agree that Cold Brews are going to be here for a long time.
